Environmental Answers to Poverty Alleviation

GER was founded in 2006 on the belief that valuing and protecting tropical rainforests can provide a key component in reducing global warming while at the same time presenting a profitable investment opportunity for capital markets. With this approach, we are able to achieve a model of tropical forest conservation whereby the forests themselves are valued by international demand for the services they provide to the global climate.

Community Driven

Rather than a top-down approach to community activities and involvement, projects that address poverty and livelihood opportunities are identified and driven by the communities themselves. Through a participatory approach at the community level, particular community needs are first established by the communities themselves, then projects to address those needs are setup and facilitated with the assistance of GER and it’s associates. In general, projects are geared towards the following:

GER and associates will work at ground level with communities in establishing and facilitating projects for the duration of the project lifecycle. Ultimately, projects are handed over to communities and are run independently by them.

Local Knowledge, Local Employment

GER believes that the best managers of the forests in which it works are the people who have traditionally lived there. That is why we aim to recruit 100% of our Forest Management Team Officers from communities in the forest areas that we monitor and protect. In this way, individuals have a direct role in protecting the forests surrounding their own communities. Ultimately this allows for the alignment of our company assets with the traditional natural assets of forest communities.
