Early Action - Learning before 2012
GER has focused its attention on “early action” projects, carbon forestry projects that are to be implemented before the year 2012, when Kyoto Protocol will expire and be replaced by a new international treat on climate change that will authorize forestry project under the REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) framework or mechanism.
Early Action projects allow a period of time for governments to implement, practice refine, and learn from carbon forestry project models before REDD takes effect. It is also a period of time for international carbon markets to adjust pricing on “voluntary” VCS markets and develop trust in carbon credits being generated from forestry project in host countries. This should translate into higher carbon credit prices for such forestry projects post 2012 when a regulated (or REDD) market is expected to be established.
